Wild Wednesdays - 2:30-4:30
September 4 - October 9 and April 16, 23, May 7, 21, and 28
We spend the afternoon exploring the nearby woods and trails just beyond Summer Street - building forts, hiking, playing games. Children will be dropped off at Colonel Town Recreation by bus or parent/guardian where they will be met by Taproot staff. We will return to Colonel Town at 4:30 for pick up or children will be brought to Safe Haven for later pick up. In the spring if the weather allows, we will also be in the garden. Open to children in 3rd-5th grade. Program is free to children attending schools in the SAU 36 school district.
Parents will sign their child up through Colonel Town Recreation. Space is limited to 12. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to sign up early.
Research supports that unstructured play has an important role in the healthy physical and social-emotional development of a child. And unstructured play outside is extremely beneficial to our children's mental health. Additionally, studies show that play can lead to a stronger academic performance. Whether it is building a fort or using sticks and leaves to create props in an afternoon of pretend play, our children are working and learning.
Junior Chefs - 2:30-4:30
February 5, 12, and 19 March 5, 12, and 19
This program will take place in our Education Kitchen located at 101 Main Street. Children will be dropped off at Colonel Town Recreation by bus or parent/guardian where they will be met by Taproot staff. Parents may pick up children at Taproot at the end of the program. Children continuing the afternoon with Safe Haven will be walked back over to to Colonel Town. Open to children in 5th and 6th grade. Program is free to children attending schools in the SAU 36 school district.
The first week is mandatory for participation since food and kitchen safety will be covered.
